About Me

Welcome!

I'm April, the person behind the camera. I'm from Sibley, Iowa, and have been capturing your milestones & memories since 2013.

I bring both direction and calm reassurance. You’ll never be left wondering what to do with your hands or how to stand—I’ll  guide you through each step so it feels easy. And when everything clicks, you’ll probably hear me ooohing and ahhhing in delight, or blurting out, “So good!” more times than I can count. It’s my way of  letting you know just how incredible you look and how excited I am for  you!

Away from the camera, plants are one of my favorite sources of joy. In the  warmer months, I nurture a flower garden. It often has weeds, but it’s a reminder that growth doesn’t need to be perfect to be beautiful. Inside our home, one room has been dubbed the “plant room,” filled with around 80 houseplants.

When I’m not photographing clients or watering something green, you can find  me traveling with my husband. Whether it’s a simple day trip or a longer journey, we love exploring new places, trying new foods, and creating memories together. And yes, I take pictures during my  “off-time” too! I just can’t help myself!

I never took professional senior photos when I was in high school and here's the story about that...

I was a shy & insecure teen, and the thought of a stranger photographing me was intimidating! So instead of hiring a professional to take my pictures, I asked my friend’s mom to do them for me. She had a nice camera and I enjoyed the wildflowers in her backyard. We lined up a day for pictures, but didn’t really talk about what I had in mind for my senior portraits.

I showed up for senior photos and was welcomed into her home. Immediately, I noticed she had moved all her living room furniture with the exception of a few props. I thought, “Ok, I guess we’re starting in the living room.” The beige walls were very unflattering with my pale skin and blonde hair. Then, after several awkward photos taken around the room, the session was suddenly over.

We never made it out to the backyard like I had envisioned. I felt I had no right to ask about the flowers since she was doing this as a favor to me. I could find one photo of myself where I didn’t think I looked completely washed out, but the whole experience left me feeling disappointed and guilty for being disappointed.

Years later, I still had regrets about not getting professional senior photos. My less-than-stellar image sat in a line of well-lit, beautiful portraits of siblings and cousins at my grandparents house. So when I graduated college, I hired a professional photographer to take my college graduation photos. I replaced my high school senior photo with a college senior photo of me.

Because of this experience, I make sure to communicate with you what you have in mind for backgrounds and ideas for your pictures, long before the session itself. We discuss your outfits to make sure what you’re wearing goes with the different landscapes we’ll be using. During your photo session, I understand how uncomfortable it can feel being in front of the camera. So I describe and often show you how to pose, while encouraging you along the way! I ask for your input during your photo session in case you think of something in the moment that you want to try.

I feel very fortunate to get to have a career that I love, and work with wonderful clients like you! If you have any questions for me, feel free to reach out!
